Athens, Georgia, long celebrated for its vibrant music scene, has now stepped into the cinematic spotlight with the establishment of Athena Studios—the city’s first major film production facility. This ambitious project signifies a transformative leap for the local economy and the state’s burgeoning film industry.
Located on Athens’ east side off Olympic Drive, Athena Studios spans 45 acres and boasts over 350,000 square feet of purpose-built space designed to accommodate film and television productions of all sizes. The facility includes multiple sound stages, production offices, support buildings, and an educational facility tailored for aspiring filmmakers.
Notably, one of its sound stages has been dedicated to the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, providing students with hands-on experience in a professional setting.
Athena Studios officially opened its doors in March 2023, and by March 2024, it welcomed its first major production—a feature film from Blumhouse Productions, known for hits like Get Out and Five Nights at Freddy’s. This milestone underscores the studio’s capacity to host high-profile projects and positions Athens as a competitive player in Georgia’s film industry.
Looking ahead, Athena Studios is poised to host a diverse array of upcoming projects, including the premiere of American Deadbolt, a film shot on location at the studio. This influx of productions is expected to generate significant economic activity in Athens, creating job opportunities in various sectors, including hospitality, catering, and retail. Local businesses stand to benefit from increased demand as crew members and talent frequent the area.
Moreover, the studio’s educational initiatives are fostering a new generation of film professionals. By partnering with institutions like the University of Georgia and the Georgia Film Academy, Athena Studios is providing students with invaluable industry experience, thereby strengthening the local talent pipeline. This synergy between education and industry is enhancing Athens’ reputation as a hub for creative professionals.
With its state-of-the-art facilities and strategic location, Athena Studios is not only enhancing Athens’ cultural landscape but also contributing to Georgia’s reputation as a premier destination for film production.
