Meet Our New Neighbor: The Athens Area Human Society

Moving in this summer

On November 2, 2020, Athens Area Humane Society began construction on their future home, right next door to Stanfield Air Systems on Mitchell Bridge Road. Featuring a new community clinic and adoption center, this 15,000 square foot facility is nearly three times larger than their original Mars Hill Road shelter.

The Athens Area Humane Society helps more than 6,000 companion animals annually through low-cost spay/neuter services, rescue and adoption, pet food pantry assistance, and education programs that strengthen the bond between caregivers and their pets. They estimate that the new vet-designed facility will allow them to help, heal, and home more than 13,000 pets every year--that’s a lot of lives!

“The Athens Area Humane Society is on a mission to change the perception of what an animal shelter is”, says AAHS CEO Dr. Cheryl McCormick. “We want the public to view the new facility as a community destination - a joyful, friendly place where the inextricable bond between people and pets is celebrated.”

Everyone at Stanfield is excited about our new neighbor and furry friends that will be right next door. To help welcome them to the neighborhood, we’re hosting a pet food drive to make sure that their shelves are stocked when they arrive at their new facility this summer. Stanfield will match every bag of pet food dropped off at our offices, or we will take $10 off any service if you donate a bag of pet food when we come to your house for any service or repairs. Preferred pet food brands include:

  • Purina Dog Chow (red bag) adult dog food (wet or dry)

  • Authority Puppy Chow (wet or dry)

  • Friskies Adult Canned Paté

  • Fancy Feast for Kittens (wet)

  • Purina Dry Adult Cat Food

  • Royal Canin for Kittens (dry).
